Key benefits

Analgesic, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, expectorant, parasiticide, stimulant, tonic. It has antiviral, antitoxic and bactericidal properties. Oregano has properties similar to those of marjoram, but more pronounced, and it is no coincidence that it is also called wild marjoram. Oregano oil is used for all kinds of infections and can be a lifesaver for people suffering from colitis and gastrointestinal inflammation. It also contributes to the normal functioning of the respiratory and immune systems.

1. A powerful natural antibiotic.

It is known for preventing infections such as:

– urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by bacteria such as E. coli, Proteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

– respiratory tract infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria strains.

– fungal infections, even those resistant to the commonly used antifungal drug Diflucan.

– parasitic infections caused by the amoeba Giardia – a study found oregano oil to be more effective than antibiotics such as Tinidazole.

– oregano oil has strong antibacterial properties that can destroy the deadly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacterium (MRSA infection).

– oregano oil also shows promising results in preventing foodborne illnesses caused by pathogens such as Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli and Shigella dysenteriae.

– a study by the University of Arizona found that oregano oil can help destroy norovirus, which causes gastroenteritis.

– oregano oil is also a valuable antiseptic essential oil in aromatherapy.

2. Helps lower cholesterol. Studies show that oregano oil can help lower cholesterol. In one study, 48 people with mildly high cholesterol were given diet and lifestyle advice to help lower their cholesterol. Thirty-two participants took oregano oil after every meal. After 3 months, those given oregano oil had lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and higher HDL (good) cholesterol than those who only followed the diet.

3. A powerful antioxidant. One study compared the antioxidant content of 39 commonly used herbs and found that oregano has the highest concentration of antioxidants.

4. Helps with fungal infections. In test-tube studies, oregano essential oil was found to be effective against five different types of Candida, such as those that cause infections in the mouth and vagina. According to the research, it was more effective than any other essential oil tested. Test-tube research has also found that carvacrol, one of the main compounds of oregano oil , is very effective against oral candida. High levels of Candida are also linked to some bowel conditions, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. A test-tube study of the effectiveness of oregano essential oil on 16 different strains of Candida concluded that oregano oil may be a good alternative treatment for fungal infections caused by Candida.

5. Improves gut health. Oregano oil can benefit gut health in many ways. Intestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, pain and bloating are common and can be caused by intestinal parasites. In one study, 600 mg of oregano oil was given to 14 people with intestinal symptoms caused by a parasite. After daily treatment for 6 weeks, all participants had a reduction in parasites and 77% were completely cured.

Oregano oil may also help protect against another common gut complaint known as “leaky gut”. This happens when the gut wall becomes damaged, allowing bacteria and toxins to pass into the bloodstream. In a study on pigs, oregano essential oil protected the gut wall from damage and kept it from becoming “leaky”. Oregano oil also reduced the number of E. coli bacteria in the gut.

6. Has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation in the body is linked to a number of adverse health effects. Research shows that oregano oil can reduce inflammation. One study in mice found that oregano essential oil, together with thyme essential oil, significantly reduced inflammatory markers.

7. Has strong pain-relieving properties. One study in mice tested standard painkillers and essential oils, including oregano essential oil, for their ability to relieve pain. Oregano essential oil was found to significantly reduce pain in mice, with effects similar to those of the commonly used painkillers fenoprofen and morphine. According to the research, these results are probably due to the high carvacrol content of oregano oil.

8. Has anti-cancer activity. Several studies show that carvacrol, one of the compounds in oregano oil, may have cancer-fighting properties. In test-tube studies on cancer cells, oregano oil has shown promising results against lung, liver and breast cancer cells. It was found to inhibit cell growth and cause cancer cell death.

9. Helps wounds heal faster. Applying diluted oregano oil to the skin can help cuts and grazes heal faster and protect against bacterial infections.

10. A natural repellent. Both carvacrol and thymol can be effective insect repellents. In 2017, researchers found that these compounds repel some ticks and mosquitoes. The research included test-tube studies and studies with human participants. Rubbing diluted oregano oil onto the skin can be a natural way to keep insects away.

11. Supports weight loss. Oregano oil can also be a useful aid for people who want to lose weight. Researchers have found that carvacrol, the main compound in oregano oil, disrupts part of the process that leads to the creation and accumulation of fat tissue.
