Regarded as sacred by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Hebrews, rosemary is much more than an aromatic herb with a pleasant taste. Rosemary is one of the most powerful herbs and essential oils on the planet.
Rosemary has a woody aroma and belongs to the mint family. Recent research shows that it activates nerve growth factor and helps heal neurological tissue and brain function.
The people of the Mediterranean have used this evergreen plant in folk medicine for thousands of years to improve memory, soothe digestive problems and relieve muscle pain. This product, remarkable for its healing properties, was a favourite of the German-Swiss physician and botanist Paracelsus.
With an ORAC antioxidant value of 3,300, rosemary has the same antioxidant potential as goji berries. The chemical responsible for this effect is carnosol, a phenolic diterpene. As well as being a powerful antioxidant, carnosol is known for its anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, which explains why rosemary oil is so powerful. An article published in the scientific journal Cancer Letters states: “Carnosol is of interest for research because of its anti-cancer properties in prostate, breast, skin and colon cancer and leukaemia, showing encouraging results.
Carnosol has been found to target cells selectively to reduce the effect of inflammation, and also:
– To balance androgen and oestrogen levels in the body.
– To lower the level of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which improves hair growth and prostate health.
– To reduce the risk of cancer.
– To increase the level of nerve growth factor when treating damaged nerve tissue.”
According to the researchers, “Carnosol shows selective toxicity towards cancer cells without affecting healthy ones and is well tolerated when administered to animals.”
