Key benefits

1. Maintains healthy blood sugar levels: Coriander oil contains compounds that lead to a wide range of pharmacological activities, including the ability to lower cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. A study published in the Journal of Food Science shows that in diagnosed diabetes, coriander oil helps maintain liver function and balances blood sugar. The researchers believe that coriander oil could be a remedy against diabetes. To regulate blood sugar, take 1 drop of the oil internally.

2. Relieves gas, vomiting and bloating: Coriander has been used for thousands of years to calm bouts of vomiting and symptoms of seasickness, against gas and belching, constipation and heartburn, and to soothe stomach cramps. Its natural antibacterial properties help prevent diseases carried by food and water (including food poisoning, dysentery, salmonella, cholera and listeriosis). A study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology on the benefits of fennel oil, coriander oil and eucalyptus oil found that coriander oil is especially effective against listeriosis. Apply 2–3 drops externally to the lower stomach or take 1 drop internally.

3. Helps with rashes and skin irritation: Coriander oil is considered an effective Ayurvedic remedy for rashes and itching, thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and soothing properties. Coriander oil is used internally and externally for sunburn and allergies (for example to poison ivy). It is a natural antihistamine and calms the immune system's response to allergens. It is usually applied in combination with coconut oil to soothe skin inflammation and allergens. Apply 2–3 drops externally to the affected areas.

4. Relieves anxiety: Coriander oil is a mild stimulant and can relax the mind, reducing nervousness and stress. Use in an aroma lamp, or apply a mixture of coriander oil, lavender oil and Roman chamomile oil externally to the feet or the back of the neck.

5. Helps soothe muscle and joint pain: Because of its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, coriander oil can reduce pain associated with arthritis, rheumatism, stiffness and gout. Apply externally to the affected area.

6. May help with adrenal fatigue: To support the adrenal glands naturally and encourage their proper functioning, apply coriander oil to the back of the neck or the soles of the feet.

7. Stimulates the appetite: Coriander oil stimulates the appetite and fights anorexia. Coriander oil helps efficient digestion, as it supports the production of digestive enzymes that break down food. Take 1 drop internally or rub 2–3 drops on your palms and inhale.

8. Prevents neurological inflammation: Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and some brain tumours are linked to chronic inflammation. A study published in Molecular Neurobiology found that diets rich in pepper, ginger, garlic, cinnamon and coriander help prevent the inflammation associated with these devastating diseases. The researchers note that these factors are responsible for a decrease in cases of such neurological degeneration.

9. Protection against colon cancer: It is thought that coriander oil may protect against colon cancer by lowering cholesterol levels and increasing the excretion of sterol compounds and bile. This process lowers toxic levels in the colon, reducing the risk of cancer. Take 1 drop internally or apply 2–3 drops to the lower stomach.

10. Supports healthy menstrual function: Coriander oil helps maintain healthy menstrual function by regulating the endocrine glands and the hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. It may reduce cramps and pain during the cycle.

11. Preventing urinary tract infections: Urinary tract infections can be caused by E. coli, staph bacteria, sexual activity, genetic problems or diabetes. The antibacterial components in coriander oil help keep the urinary tract healthy and free of harmful bacteria in a healthy alkaline environment. Coriander oil helps relieve the symptoms of this type of infection.

Description

Coriander is known as Coriandrum sativum in medical research, where it is recognised for its many health benefits. It has deep historical roots. Coriander seeds were found in the ancient Egyptian tomb of Ramesses the Great, and also in caves from the time of ancient Israel.

Ayurvedic medicine uses coriander to support liver function, fight bacterial infections, support digestive enzymes, detoxify the liver and kidneys, support good memory, treat skin rashes and stimulate insulin secretion. It is known as an “antidiabetic” plant in some parts of Europe.

Coriander essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the seeds. It has a woody, spicy and sweet aroma.

A 2014 study found that coriander oil can fight fungal infections in the mouth. The study highlights the antifungal potential of coriander oil and suggests its use in future toxicological research.

Coriander oil can also effectively kill pathogenic bacteria associated with food poisoning and hospital infections. The research indicates that coriander oil shows effective antimicrobial activity against all the bacteria tested.

Coriander oil has antibacterial, antifungal, sedative and calming effects; it can help relieve migraine headaches, soothes a nervous stomach, cares for digestion, improves blood circulation, supports a healthy insulin response and helps relieve muscle and joint pain.
