Benefits of using ylang-ylang oil:
1. Helps regulate blood pressure. Ylang-ylang supports healthy circulation. It is regarded as one of the most useful oils for controlling blood pressure and protecting against cardiac arrhythmia. Dilute with a carrier oil and apply 1 drop externally over the heart, or add 2 drops to water or warm tea.
2. Helps keep skin healthy. When applied to the skin, ylang-ylang may not only prevent ageing but even prevent the development of skin cancer cells, including melanoma. Combine 2 drops with equal parts of coconut or jojoba oil and apply externally to the affected area twice a day.
3. Lifts mood and energy. It acts directly on brain function, and inhaling ylang-ylang oil can have an immediate positive effect on your mood. This is due to its property as a natural antidepressant. As such, it calms and also helps with insomnia. Combine 3–5 drops with a carrier oil and massage your temples.
4. Helps hormonal balance. The oil helps reduce the tension and stress associated with PMS. Combine 2 drops of ylang-ylang oil with lavender oil and apply the mixture locally to the neck and lower abdomen.
5. May reduce confusion, anxiety and anger. Ylang-ylang oil helps eliminate negative emotions, including anger, jealousy and low self-esteem. Diffuse or inhale directly from the bottle to help relieve anxiety.
6. Improves and encourages self-esteem. Inhaling the oil can have an immediate positive effect on self-esteem. It can give you energy and help you overcome chronic fatigue and face life's challenges with confidence and optimism. Inhale directly, diffuse in the air or apply to the wrists and neck.
7. A natural aphrodisiac. The oil acts as a natural remedy for erectile dysfunction (impotence) and increases libido in both men and women. The boost in energy creates a feeling of relaxation. Diffuse or apply externally to the temples, wrists or neck.

Ylang-ylang has an interesting history in both East and West. In India, ylang-ylang flowers are scattered over the newlyweds' bed on their wedding night. In the Philippines, healers have used ylang-ylang for centuries in creams to treat insect and snake bites, burns, cuts and scars. The medicinal substances in ylang-ylang were recognised in the early 20th century by the French chemists Garnier and Rechler. They discovered that the oil is an effective remedy for various diseases, including malaria, typhoid and intestinal infections. They also noticed that the oil has a calming effect on the heart in distress. In Eastern medicine, ylang-ylang is the calming agent for the heart, and this is considered its most important therapeutic action.
Ylang-ylang essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flowers of a large tropical tree and has a very luxurious, floral and sensual aroma. Ylang-ylang means “flower of flowers” and was named for its distinctive scent. It is considered an effective antidepressant, antiseptic and antispasmodic. It has a positive effect on the immune system, circulation and emotions. Negative emotions are one of the most dangerous and toxic forms of oxidative stress. They are often underestimated, but they are a precondition for many serious health problems. With its properties, ylang-ylang oil has become a natural remedy for disorders of the endocrine, cardiovascular, reproductive and digestive systems.
Research: A 2006 study found that ylang-ylang oil relieves depression and stress in aromatherapy. It caused a significant drop in blood pressure, and the patients who took part in the study felt much calmer and more relaxed than people in the control group. Ylang-ylang oil significantly lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure in studies of 29 men. It also lowers the heart rate and has a sedative effect when inhaled.
