1. Relief of joint and muscle pain:Wintergreen oil reduces swelling and irritation. A few drops massaged into the skin are great for relieving joint pain from arthritis or rheumatism, muscle pain, chronic neck pain, and back and lower back pain. When rubbed into the affected area, wintergreen oil is easily absorbed through the skin, and the methyl salicylate it contains causes a numbing, anaesthetic effect on the nerves. It also boosts blood circulation and has a warming effect.
2. For colds and flu: The methyl salicylate in wintergreen oil helps reduce the pain, congestion, swelling and fever associated with colds and flu. To clear the airways, combine wintergreen oil with coconut oil, then rub it into your chest and upper back. Other useful oils that can be included in this blend are eucalyptus, peppermint and bergamot.
3. Strong antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral action:Wintergreen oil has a very strong action against bacteria, germs, viruses, fungi and protozoa. This property is used to fight infections that cause sepsis by destroying the causative bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Care must be taken, however, and it should never be applied to open wounds, nor taken by mouth to fight sepsis in the internal organs. Simply applying this oil to the skin is enough, as it easily penetrates the skin, is absorbed by the tissues and then into the blood, thus reaching the internal organs as well.
4. Eases digestion and acts as a diuretic:Wintergreen oil can be used in small doses to increase stomach acid and juices, which helps improve digestion. It is considered a natural mild diuretic, which in turn helps cleanse the digestive tract and reduce bloating. Wintergreen also has anti-nausea benefits and a soothing effect on the stomach lining and colon because of its antispasmodic property, which makes it a natural remedy against nausea. You can use it diluted in coconut oil to massage the abdomen, stomach and lower back to improve blood flow and prevent cramps or pain.
5. Benefits for the hair and skin: Thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, wintergreen oil has a very good effect on problem, acne-prone, itchy, red and swollen skin. The oil is also used on the scalp to remove bacteria, oiliness and dandruff while adding a fresh scent. For this purpose, add a few drops to your favourite skin and hair wash.
6. For energy and fighting fatigue: Native Americans used wintergreen leaves to increase alertness and endurance during exercise, as it helps increase breathing capacity. You can combine it with peppermint oil and inhale before workouts to increase concentration and alertness. You can also rub it into your neck, chest and wrists to fight drowsiness or help overcome chronic fatigue syndrome.

Wintergreen oil is extracted from the leaves of the evergreen shrub Gaultheria procumbens by steam distillation. The plant grows freely in Asia and North and South America. Its leaves are themselves odourless and tasteless, but once a compound called gaultherin present in them is enzymatically hydrolysed into methyl salicylate, its distinctive aroma develops. Methyl salicylate is also the main component of the oil (over 90%). Wintergreen oil is widely used as an active ingredient in many creams and gels for relieving muscle and bone pain. Today it is also often used to relieve other painful conditions: headaches, nerve pain (especially sciatica), arthritis, ovarian pain and menstrual cramps. It is also used for digestive problems, including stomach pain and gas (flatulence); lung conditions, including asthma and pleurisy; pain and swelling (inflammation); fever; and kidney problems.
Wintergreen oil has an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, warming and disinfecting action.
