Key benefits

1. Reduces inflammation: Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated ones affects the degree of inflammation in the body. A 2015 study found that taking pumpkin seed oil reduced the symptoms of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis in people suffering from these conditions.

2. Nutritional support in cancer:Pumpkin seed oil has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Further research has found that it may help prevent breast cancer.

Pumpkin seed oil may reduce or suppress the growth of prostate cancer cells.

3. Supports urinary tract health:Pumpkin seed oil is often used to promote prostate health. It seems especially useful for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterised by an enlarged prostate gland that can block the flow of urine. According to an older study of 47 men with BPH, taking 320 mg of pumpkin seed oil a day for 12 months reduced symptoms, improved quality of life and increased urine flow.

Other studies show that pumpkin seed oil may also help treat other urinary tract problems. For example, a study of 45 people showed that taking 10 grams of pumpkin seed oil a day for 12 weeks reduced the symptoms of an overactive bladder.

4. Improves heart health: Several studies have found that pumpkin seed oil may be good for heart health. In a small study of postmenopausal women, taking 3 grams of pumpkin seed oil a day led to significant improvements in the stiffness and function of the blood vessels, which may help prevent high blood pressure.

Another study from 2011 showed that adding pumpkin seed oil to the diet raised HDL (good) cholesterol in 35 postmenopausal women.

Some older animal studies have observed similar findings, reporting that pumpkin seed oil may help lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels while improving blood pressure.

5. Benefits for men: Pumpkin seeds have long been valued as an important natural food for men's health. This is partly due to their high zinc content, which is important for prostate health (where zinc is found in the highest concentrations in the body). Pumpkin seed oil plays an important role in managing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or an enlarged prostate). Research shows that it can be very useful in supporting prostate health.

6. Benefits for women: Pumpkin seed oil is also rich in natural phytoestrogens, and studies show that it can lead to a significant increase in good “HDL” cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and reduce hot flushes, headaches, joint pain and other menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women.

7. May improve hair growth: Pumpkin seed oil is sometimes used as a supplement or applied topically to support healthy hair growth. In one study, 76 men with hair loss took 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil or a placebo a day for 24 weeks. At the end of the study, those who took pumpkin seed oil reported higher scores for hair loss improvement and had four times more hair growth than those in the control group.

Another small study found that pumpkin seed oil may also increase hair growth in women with hair loss when applied topically for 3 months.

8. Pumpkin seed oil is also effective for irritable bowel syndrome, for dealing with intestinal parasites such as tapeworm, for reducing the symptoms of osteoporosis and for preventing kidney stones.

Description

Pumpkin seeds have been popular for centuries, dating back to 1300 AD. They were known in the time of the Aztecs, who valued them as food and medicine. Native American tribes used pumpkin seeds to treat kidney disease and to remove intestinal parasites.

Pumpkin seed oil is rich in heart-healthy fats. In fact, one tablespoon (15 ml) of pumpkin seed oil provides 14 grams of fat, most of which comes from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids.

Pumpkin seed oil is especially rich in linoleic acid, a type of omega-6 fatty acid that may be linked to improved heart health and blood sugar regulation. Omega-6 fatty acids are crucial for normal growth and development and for brain function; they help stimulate hair growth, keep the skin looking good, regulate metabolism and maintain bone and reproductive health (University of Maryland Medical Center).

In addition, pumpkin seed oil contains large amounts of antioxidant compounds, including polyphenols, carotenoids and phytosterols, which may help protect against inflammation and chronic disease. Phytosterols also help lower blood cholesterol.

Pumpkin seed oil has a very good anti-inflammatory effect. Studies have shown that it works with the strength of indometacin, but without the side effects.

Pumpkin seed oil is also rich in zinc, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamins K, E and B.

Pumpkin seed oil contains tocopherol, a powerful antioxidant also known as vitamin E. It helps the body absorb vitamin K and also plays a role in the formation of red blood cells, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Pumpkin seed oil is also a source of vitamin K. This vitamin helps maintain healthy bones in older people.
