Key benefits

1. Bacterial infections: A 2016 study found that lemongrass essential oil is effective in fighting strains of the bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii. This multi-resistant bacterium can cause pneumonia and blood infections. Because lemongrass essential oil is effective at inhibiting and killing the bacteria, it may become an additional therapy in the future for fighting diseases that do not respond to antibiotics.

In another study, a 2% gel of lemongrass essential oil inhibited the growth of bacteria that cause gum disease.

2. Reduces inflammation: Chronic inflammation can cause many health problems, including arthritis, diabetes and some types of cancer. A 2014 study showed that lemongrass essential oil has powerful anti-inflammatory effects in fungal infections.

3. Stomach problems: Lemongrass oil has been used for centuries for upset stomachs, gastritis and stomach ulcers. Add 1–2 drops of the oil to tea, soup or a smoothie.

A 2012 study in an animal model examined the effects of lemongrass essential oil on stomach ulcers caused by ethanol and aspirin damage. The study found that lemongrass essential oil protects against stomach damage and may be a potential therapy for these types of ulcers. In addition, eugenol, a component found in lemongrass essential oil, may help relieve pain and improve stomach upsets and diarrhoea.

4. Good cholesterol: Taking lemongrass oil helps maintain healthy triglyceride levels and reduces levels of “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. Take 1–2 drops internally.

5. Parasites: Take 1–2 drops internally a day.

6. Reduces fever: Add 1–2 drops to tea or a smoothie.

7. A natural repellent: Add 5 drops to an aroma lamp, or 10–15 drops to a spray bottle of water and spray onto exposed parts of the body. Lemongrass oil is also very effective against fleas – add 5 drops to a little water and apply to the animal's coat.

8. Healthy skin:Lemongrass oil has antiseptic properties and is perfect for radiant skin. Add a few drops to your face cream, body lotion or shower gel.

9. A natural deodorant: Use lemongrass oil as a natural and safe air freshener and deodorant. Add 5–10 drops to an aroma lamp.

Description

Lemongrass is a wonderful citrus spice in Thai cuisine with a great deal of therapeutic power. Traditionally, parts of lemongrass and its oil have been used for circulation problems, behavioural problems, headaches, infections, nervous system problems and menstrual complaints. In some cultures lemongrass is known as “fever grass” because of its ability to help bring down a fever naturally. Lemongrass oil becomes even more effective when combined with black pepper oil.
Lemongrass essential oil is used in aromatherapy to help relieve muscle pain, fight bacteria, repel insects, reduce body aches and aid digestion. It can also be used to flavour teas and soups and added as a fragrance to cosmetics, soaps and deodorants. The leaves of the herb are steam-distilled to extract the essential oil, which has a light, fresh lemon scent with earthy undertones. Lemongrass essential oil is stimulating, relaxing, soothing and balancing.
