Description

Called the “forbidden fruit” and one of the “seven wonders of Barbados”, the grapefruit was first described in 1750 by the Welsh Reverend Griffith Hughes. The name “grapefruit” refers to the fruit growing in clusters, which makes it resemble grapes. The earliest records of the fruit date from the early 18th century in the West Indies, and Florida is where a grapefruit tree was first planted on a plantation, in 1820.
Grapefruit oil has been used for centuries to fight inflammation, excess weight, uncontrolled sugar cravings and even hangover symptoms. It is very popular, has a clean, fresh aroma and a slightly bitter taste, like the fruit itself. In taste and aroma it resembles other citrus oils and fruits that people like to use for cosmetic purposes in lotions, soaps and shampoos.
Scientific research:
A 2002 study indicates that grapefruit oil significantly affects activity and the feeling of relaxation. People who inhaled the oil enjoyed an improved mood and a reduced feeling of stress. They also reported a significant drop in systolic blood pressure.
The researchers found that the oil has refreshing and stimulating properties when inhaled, suggesting that it activates the sympathetic nervous system, which helps control body weight.
