Key benefits

1. Reduces oxidative stress: many of the biologically active compounds in sesame contribute to its antioxidant activity.

2. Improves digestion and is often used as a remedy for ulcers and gastritis.

3. Lowers “bad” cholesterol: the most abundant sterol in tahini is beta-sitosterol, which has been shown to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol and improve the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol.

4. Lowers blood pressure: Sesame seeds have antihypertensive properties, according to studies examining the effects of sesame taken by adults with high blood pressure.

5. Optimises metabolism: sesame seeds have also been found to help increase the absorption of fat-soluble compounds such as tocopherol.

6. Beneficial for diabetes: studies among diabetics show reductions in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and lipid peroxidation.

7. Strengthens the cardiovascular system: Sesamolin and sesamin, which predominate in sesame seeds, have been found to have antithrombotic properties.

8. Protects against radiation-induced DNA damage: sesamol has shown protective activity against DNA damage from gamma radiation.

9. Improves the health of the skin and hair: Sesame seeds are a good source of amino acids, vitamin E, B vitamins, trace elements and fatty acids, which help rejuvenate skin cells and prevent early signs of ageing.

10. Strengthens bones and joints: the high calcium and magnesium content contributes to strong bones and joints.

11. Helps relieve osteoarthritis: a clinical study in Iran found that taking 40 g of ground sesame seed a day has the same effect as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the clinical signs and symptoms of patients with knee osteoarthritis.

12. Reduces cancer risk: Studies show that lignans such as sesamin may help reduce the risk of hormone-related cancers.

Description

Sesame, in the form of seeds, oil or tahini, is widely known around the world today.

It is valued not only for its culinary use but also because it can benefit human health. It is no coincidence that it is known as a superfood. It is a source of oleic and linoleic fatty acids (omega-6 and omega-9), protein, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc and iron, and it also contains B vitamins, vitamin E, fibre, amino acids such as lysine, tryptophan and methionine, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, phytosterols and lignans such as sesamol, sesamin and sesamolin.

Golden sesame seeds are perhaps the most highly prized in the world of sesame, with their incredible aroma and rich nutty flavour. Golden sesame differs from white sesame in that it is yellow and has a stronger aroma. It is the only luxury variety among sesame types. The phytochemicals and nutrients in sesame make sesame tahini not only a tasty but also a healthy food, suitable for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, women in menopause, athletes and anyone who has chosen healthy eating. It should not be overdone, however: adults can take up to 3 tablespoons a day.
