Safety and side effects:

When taken in the recommended amounts, flaxseed and flaxseed oil are generally safe to use.

People with thyroid problems or on hormone therapy should avoid flaxseed oil. The same applies to people on anticoagulant or blood-pressure-lowering treatment. Flaxseed may lower blood sugar levels. Taking flaxseed with diabetes medicines or with herbs or supplements with hypoglycaemic potential may lower blood sugar too much. Taking flaxseed may reduce the effects of oral contraceptives and oestrogen replacement therapy.

Oral medicines. Taking flaxseed may reduce the absorption of oral medicines. Consider taking oral medicines and flaxseed an hour or two apart.

Children under 3 and pregnant women should avoid taking flaxseed oil internally.

Flaxseed oil is sensitive to oxidation because of its high omega-3 fatty acid content. Once opened, it keeps for 6 to 8 months in a cool place, preferably in the fridge, protected from light.

Key benefits

1. Anti-inflammatory action:Flaxseed oil is especially rich in omega-3 fatty acids, so it helps inhibit inflammatory processes in the body. These anti-inflammatory benefits are visible both at skin level and throughout the body in inflammatory diseases.

2. Heart health: It is associated with lower cholesterol and blood pressure and acts as a cardiovascular protector, increasing the elasticity of the arteries.

3. Hormonal balance:Flaxseed oil appears to have hormone-regulating properties. In particular, it can be taken orally to support female hormonal balance. Clinical studies show its beneficial effect on menopausal symptoms and symptoms related to the menstrual cycle in women. Some in vivo studies have found that supplementing with flaxseed oil may improve reproductive health and sperm quality in males.

4. Bowel regulation:Flaxseed oil is useful for regulating intestinal transit and helps with both constipation and diarrhoea.

5. Benefits for the skin: Clinical studies show that supplementing with flaxseed oil may help skin smoothness and hydration and help deal with atopic dermatitis by reducing redness, swelling and itching.

7. Benefits for the eyes: Taking flaxseed oil reduces dry eyes in people with Sjögren's syndrome. This is largely due to omega-3 fatty acids.

8. Benefits for your pet: Flaxseed oil or flaxseed is added to the feed of chickens, sheep, horses, pigs and others. The omega-3 in flaxseed oil can also benefit your pet – for better mobility in dogs with arthritis, normal blood pressure and kidney function, and a shiny, thick coat.

Some in vitro and in vivo studies show that flaxseed oil may reduce the growth of cancer cells, although further human studies are needed.

Including just one or two teaspoons of the oil in your daily routine is easy and may have many benefits for your overall health. It can be added to salads, smoothies and various other dishes without cooking.

Description

Flaxseed oil is a clear yellow liquid with a characteristic slightly bitter taste, obtained by cold pressing the raw, dried seeds of cultivated flax. Flaxseed oil is one of the richest plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids – about 60% – while about 20% is omega-6.

Valued and used since ancient times, flaxseed oil also contains large amounts of vitamins A, E and F, as well as minerals such as potassium, magnesium and zinc and other biologically active substances needed for human health.

Its benefits are most often associated with overall health, reduced inflammation, women's health, heart health, various skin problems and dealing with both constipation and diarrhoea.
