Key benefits

1. Relieves PMS symptoms: Using evening primrose oil also helps reduce abdominal heaviness, headaches, breast tenderness and pain, and protects against weight gain, back pain, nausea and more. It is also widely used for ovarian cysts.

A 2013 study in Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics found that a daily dose of 500 milligrams of evening primrose oil provided moderate relief from hot flushes after six weeks.

2. Diabetic neuropathy: Research shows that taking evening primrose oil daily for 6–12 months improves the symptoms of nerve damage caused by diabetes.

A 12-month study from India involving 80 people with severe diabetic neuropathy concluded that a daily dose of 500 to 1,000 milligrams of evening primrose oil, combined with 400 milligrams of vitamin E, achieved pain relief in 88% of participants.

3. Osteoporosis: Increased intake of unsaturated fats is associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis (loss of bone minerals), especially in postmenopausal women. Evening primrose oil consists almost entirely of unsaturated fatty acids, which counteract the bone loss seen in women with osteoporosis.

An 18-month study from South Africa reported that the combined use of evening primrose oil, fish oil and calcium supplements either slowed or reversed bone loss in older women (average age 79) compared with a control group of women of similar age receiving a placebo.

4. Rheumatoid arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of autoimmune arthritis that mainly affects the joints. Some studies suggest that gamma-linolenic acid may reduce pain and improve function in people with mild to moderate rheumatoid arthritis.

5. Skin irritations: In the 1980s, evening primrose oil was heavily promoted as an effective treatment for eczema by the Canadian entrepreneur David Horrobin (1939–2003). According to a 2013 review of studies by the University of Minnesota Medical School, evening primrose oil is effective for early-stage eczema, psoriasis and acne.

6. Normalises blood pressure and cholesterol: A 2014 study found that people who took evening primrose oil for 6 months had lower blood cholesterol and lower levels of inflammation.

Description

Evening primrose is a plant native to North and South America. It also grows throughout Europe and parts of Asia. It has yellow flowers that open at sunset and close during the day. Evening primrose oil is obtained by cold pressing the plant's seeds.

It contains two important omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids: linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). These essential fatty acids take an active part in the formation of important prostaglandins, which in turn provide and maintain vital functions in the body.

Gamma-linolenic acid is produced in minimal amounts in the human body but is very important for human health, which is why it needs to be obtained from external sources such as evening primrose oil. Gamma-linolenic acid is found in every organ and plays a key role in its normal functioning. It also has a calming effect on the nervous system, slows down inflammatory processes, improves the condition of the skin in psoriasis and eczema, and supports the working capacity of the cardiovascular, immune and reproductive systems.

Evening primrose oil is also used to relieve PMS symptoms. Using evening primrose oil also helps reduce abdominal heaviness, headaches, breast tenderness and pain, and protects against weight gain, back pain, nausea and more.

Evening primrose oil also has a beneficial effect on various gastrointestinal and urinary problems. It reduces depression, irritability, aggression and feelings of anxiety.

Evening primrose oil is also used for a number of skin conditions such as eczema, atopic dermatitis and acne. It gives very good results for breast pain and rheumatoid arthritis.

Taking evening primrose oil is recommended during pregnancy because it keeps the skin firm, increases its elasticity and has a positive effect on the ligaments of the pelvis. Gamma-linolenic acid supports the proper development of the foetus's brain and nervous system.

Evening primrose oil can also be used for the following problems: high blood pressure, complications after a stroke or heart attack, hormonal problems, impaired vision, the nervous system, recovery after severe infectious diseases and poisoning, treatment of non-healing wounds, rejuvenation and rapid regeneration of the skin after weight-loss diets and plastic surgery; it also relieves unpleasant menopausal symptoms.
