Bergamot is a kind of hybrid between bitter orange and lemon, originating in South-East Asia. Bergamot oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel. It also grows in Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy and Algeria. Bergamot is best known for flavouring black tea: add one drop of the oil to ordinary black tea to get the famous Earl Grey.
Bergamot oil is unique among citrus oils in being both invigorating and calming. This makes it useful for anxiety and nervousness. Bergamot oil purifies and soothes the skin. It is known to fight bacteria and improve wound scars, headaches and muscle tension. It stimulates digestive juices.
Scientific research:
A 2011 study showed that bergamot oil blended with lavender oil helped treat depression and anxiety in a group of patients. Compared with a placebo, the blend of oils lowered pulse rate and blood pressure.
Another study shows the ability of bergamot oil to reduce tension in the body.
