Key benefits

1. Mental clarity and calm:Sandalwood essential oil is a great natural remedy for promoting mental clarity and cognitive function; it also helps create a feeling of relaxation and calm, reducing anxiety or depression. This calming effect may even benefit people with hypertension and work to lower blood pressure levels. It helps you stay calm under stress and see things more rationally. The best way to achieve this is to apply a few drops, diluted with a carrier oil, to your ankles or wrists during intense stress or a busy day. You can also inhale the oil directly from the bottle, use it in an aroma diffuser or add a few drops to your bath at the end of a long day.

2. An anti-inflammatory agent: The active compounds in sandalwood oil work effectively to reduce inflammation. Sandalwood oil can provide relief from headaches and help treat digestive and circulatory problems. It can also be used for mild skin inflammation such as insect bites, contact irritation and more. A 2014 study found that the active compounds in sandalwood can reduce markers of inflammation in the body called cytokines. These active compounds (santalols) are thought to act similarly to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, without the potential negative side effects.

3. Antiviral and antiseptic action: Sandalwood is an excellent antiviral agent. It has been found to be useful in preventing the replication of common viruses such as herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 and HPV. A small clinical study conducted in 2017 at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, OH, United States, evaluated the effectiveness of the oil for warts caused by the human papillomavirus. Sandalwood oil was applied topically twice a day for 12 weeks to skin warts in various areas of the body. At the end of the study, 8 out of 10 (80%) had complete clearance of all treated warts. The remaining 2 subjects had an improvement rated as moderate (25% to >90%). At the same time, there were no complaints of skin irritation, erythema, itching, peeling, scarring, pain, discomfort or other adverse reactions.

If you have a sore throat, you can also gargle with a glass of water with a few drops of sandalwood oil added. Other uses include treating superficial wounds, pimples and boils.

4. Urinary tract infections: Although there are no published clinical trials confirming this effect, the internal use of sandalwood is approved by the German Commission E for supportive treatment of lower urinary tract infections. The German Commission E monograph and Dr Weiss recommend a quarter of a teaspoon (1–1.5 grams) of sandalwood essential oil for urinary tract infections. This treatment should only be carried out under the supervision of a doctor and should not last longer than six weeks.

5. Astringent and other benefits for the skin:Sandalwood oil has a mild astringent action, which is why it is a favourite ingredient in many aftershaves and facial toners that help soothe, tighten and cleanse the skin. If you want a tightening effect from your natural body care products, you can add a few drops of sandalwood oil. Many people also use sandalwood oil to fight acne and dark spots. It has been found to help clear acne and soothe sunburn, insect bites and other skin wounds. It has also been found to relieve itching and inflammation of the skin (World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research, 2018).

6. An expectorant: Put a few drops on a tissue and inhale to reduce the severity and duration of a cough.

7. A natural aphrodisiac: Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine have traditionally used sandalwood as an aphrodisiac, as it helps increase libido and may help men with impotence.

Description

Sandalwood essential oil is extremely popular in the world of aromatherapy. It is obtained from the wood by steam distillation. Of the 15 known species of sandalwood that grow around the world, the oils of two are the best known and most traded – Indian and Australian.

In Australia, sandalwood oil has been produced since 1880. From the 1920s to the 1940s, the oil was described as an antimicrobial agent in Great Britain, Belgium and France. Traditional uses at that time included taking it orally as a diuretic, as an antiseptic for the throat and respiratory system, and as a powerful antiseptic for the urogenital tract in cystitis and gonorrhoea.

Australian sandalwood essential oil is non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitising. Its aroma is rich, soft, sweet, earthy and woody. It blends well with bergamot, cedarwood, coriander, geranium, lemon, mandarin, myrrh, frankincense, ylang-ylang, neroli, patchouli, rose and vetiver oils. It is used as a perfume base or fixative by many leading perfume houses.

Relaxing, grounding and calming, sandalwood oil improves mental clarity and calms the mind, helps with sleep and meditation, and is also known for its value as a gentle aphrodisiac. It also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic, diuretic, tonic and astringent properties.
