1. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties: The various phenolic compounds in argan oil are responsible for most of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Argan oil is rich in vitamin E, or tocopherol, a fat-soluble vitamin that serves as a powerful antioxidant to reduce the harmful effects of free radicals. Other compounds present in argan oil, such as CoQ10, melatonin and plant sterols, also play a role in its antioxidant capacity. A recent study revealed a significant reduction in inflammatory markers in mice fed argan oil before exposure to a highly inflammatory liver toxin, compared with the control group.
In addition, some research shows that argan oil can be applied directly to the skin to reduce inflammation caused by injury or infection.
2. May improve heart health: Argan oil is a rich source of oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9 fat. Oleic acid is also present in several other foods, including avocado and olive oil, and is thought to have heart-protective effects. One small human study noted that argan oil is comparable to olive oil in its ability to reduce the risk of heart disease through its effect on blood antioxidant levels.
In another human study, a higher intake of argan oil was associated with lower levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and higher blood levels of antioxidants.
In a study of heart disease risk in 40 healthy people, those who consumed 15 grams of argan oil a day for 30 days had 16% and 20% reductions in “bad” LDL and triglyceride levels, respectively.
3. Benefits for diabetes: Some early animal research shows that argan oil may help prevent diabetes. Two studies led to significant reductions in both fasting blood sugar and insulin resistance in mice fed argan oil. These studies largely attribute these benefits to the oil's antioxidant content.
4. Has anti-cancer effects: Argan oil may slow the growth and reproduction of some cancer cells. One test-tube study applied polyphenolic compounds from argan oil to prostate cancer cells. The extract inhibited cancer cell growth by 50% compared with the control group.
In another test-tube study, a pharmaceutical-grade mixture of argan oil and vitamin E increased the rate of cell death in samples of breast and colon cancer cells.
5. Reduces signs of skin ageing: Argan oil has quickly become a popular ingredient in many skincare products. Some research shows that dietary intake of argan oil may help slow the ageing process by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. It may also support the repair and maintenance of healthy skin when applied directly, thus reducing the visible signs of ageing.
Other human studies show that argan oil, both taken internally and applied directly, is effective in increasing skin elasticity and hydration in postmenopausal women.
6. For inflammatory skin conditions: Argan oil has been a popular home remedy for inflammatory skin conditions for decades.
7. Promotes wound healing: Argan oil may speed up wound healing. One animal study revealed a significant increase in wound healing in rats that had argan oil applied to their second-degree burns twice a day for 14 days.
8. Moisturises the skin and hair: Oleic and linoleic acid, which make up most of the fat content of argan oil, are vital nutrients for maintaining healthy skin and hair. Argan oil is often applied directly to the skin and hair, but it can also be effective when taken internally.
In one study, both oral and topical application of argan oil improved the moisture content of the skin in postmenopausal women.
9. To fade and prevent stretch marks: Argan oil is often used to prevent and reduce stretch marks. Research shows that argan oil can help reduce inflammation and improve skin elasticity – which may be why so many people report success using it against stretch marks.
10. For acne: The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in argan oil can help reduce the redness and irritation of the skin caused by acne. Argan oil may also contribute to skin hydration, which is important for preventing acne.

Argan oil has been a staple culinary food in Morocco for centuries – not only for its subtle nutty flavour but also for its wide range of potential health benefits. This naturally occurring plant oil is extracted from the kernels of the fruit of the argan tree. Although it originates in Morocco, argan oil is used around the world for various culinary, cosmetic and medicinal applications. About 80 kg of kernels are needed to produce 1 litre of argan oil.
Argan oil is rich in antioxidants, sterols, polyphenols and vitamin E, which together help repair the skin, soothe inflammation and repel free radicals. It is used in medicine for its beneficial effect on eczema, acne, lichen and severe burns.
Argan oil slows down skin ageing, smooths wrinkles and prevents new ones, helps reduce acne and scars, and hydrates and nourishes the skin.
Argan oil is an excellent natural remedy for maintaining strong, shiny and nourished hair, thanks to its rich content of nutrients for the hair.
