Apricot kernel oil has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-ageing, antiseptic, softening and antibacterial effects.
1. Anti-cancer properties: Laboratory studies of amygdalin in animals show that amygdalin may help with pain or slow or kill certain cells that cause tumours. This includes those in cancers of the lung, bladder, kidney, prostate, cervix and colon.
2. Benefits for the cardiovascular system: Consuming apricot kernel oil can be healthier for the heart and cardiovascular system. According to 2017 research, including apricot kernel oil in the daily diet reduces the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack).
In addition, apricot kernel oil can eliminate harmful cholesterol thanks to its antioxidant properties and the lycopene it contains.
You can take apricot oil as an addition to salad or on its own.
3. Joint pain and arthritis: Arthritis is a chronic infection of the joints. People who suffer from this condition usually have severe pain and difficulty moving. Regular massage with apricot kernel oil will relieve joint pain and significantly reduce inflammation.
4. Constipation: Taking apricot oil can help with severe constipation thanks to its high fibre content, which gets the digestive system working, avoiding pain, inflammation and diarrhoea.
5. Benefits for the skin: One of the great advantages of apricot kernel oil is that it is suitable for every skin type, whether dry, oily or mature.
Apricot oil has a soothing effect on burns or irritation caused by the sun or allergic reactions.
Apricot kernel oil speeds up cell renewal and helps the formation of collagen.
Apricot kernel oil is excellent for baby skin, especially for relieving irritation, as it provides relaxation and reduces inflammation in the affected area.
Apricot kernel oil can remove dead skin cells, thus unclogging pores and removing blemishes from the skin. Thanks to its soothing action, many skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema can be improved by applying apricot kernel oil.
Apricot oil is also ideal for older people because it easily penetrates drier and more mature skin on the face, neck, the area around the eyes, the hands and so on.
6. Benefits for the hair: Apricot oil provides many benefits for the hair while strengthening it and keeping it healthy.
It boosts hair growth. Applied from root to tip for about 20 minutes before washing, it will help your hair grow much faster and stronger, thanks to its nutrients and especially vitamin E.
Using a little warm apricot kernel oil on your hair can nourish and soften it, thus preventing tangles.
It repairs hair damaged by free radicals, chemical dyes or the heat of straighteners and hairdryers.
It reduces problems with a dry scalp and helps achieve shiny hair without it looking greasy.

Apricot kernel oil is obtained by cold pressing the kernels. Apricot kernels are high in essential fatty acids, which are fundamental to health. The body cannot produce them, so they must be obtained through diet.
Apricot kernel oil is amygdalin (vitamin B17) in its purest form from nature! It is also rich in vitamins A, E and F and omega-6 and omega-9.
Vitamin B17 is called the perfect chemotherapeutic agent that acts selectively on cells: it attaches to defective cells and destroys them without damaging healthy tissue. It also acts as a painkiller, improves metabolic processes and slows down ageing in the body.
Apricot oil also contains large amounts of vitamins A, E and the B group, as well as the essential fatty acids omega-6 and omega-9. These are powerful biostimulants involved in a number of biochemical processes. Unsaturated fatty acids regenerate structural damage in cell membranes and block inflammatory processes.
Apricot kernel oil is mentioned in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is used to treat tumours and ulcers.
Apricot kernels closely resemble almonds. When the oil is extracted and processed, apricot oil is chemically similar to bitter almond oil. You can use it as a substitute for almond oil in cooking. It has a high smoke point, so it is suitable for frying and sautéing. The taste is mild and you will not notice it affecting the flavour of your dishes.
Apricot oil is very rich in oleic acid. Oleic acid is an omega-9 fatty acid that is extremely good for you, improving the health of your heart and brain. It is the main fatty acid that makes olive oil such a valuable part of a balanced diet, and it makes edible forms of apricot oil a healthy addition to your diet too.
Apricot oil is also an ingredient in skin products, including creams, exfoliants and serums. It has a softening effect, absorbs easily into the skin and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. You can also use it as a carrier oil for applying more concentrated essential oils such as frankincense, lavender or peppermint.
Psoriasis is a skin condition that appears as patches of red areas, sometimes covered with silvery scales or thickened excess tissue. The condition is chronic and has no lasting cure. Psoriasis occurs when your immune system gets confused and makes skin cells grow too quickly. In the average person, skin is shed every few weeks to be replaced with new cells. With psoriasis, you produce new skin cells in just a few days and they build up – creating patches of excess skin.
Psoriasis can also itch, and the patches can grow quite large and merge to cover large areas of skin. Since psoriasis has no cure, any treatment or relief is welcome.
According to a study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in January 2018, when apricot kernel oil is applied topically, the compounds in the oil can provide relief and reduce patches of psoriatic skin.
Further research presented in the journal International Immunopharmacology, published in May 2016, notes that psoriasis affects 2% of the world's population. Apricot kernel oil, when applied to HaCaT skin cells in the laboratory, was able to stop their growth, making the oil a promising candidate for treating psoriasis.
A paper published in Phytotherapy Research in December 2014 notes that apricot kernel oil plays a role in traditional Oriental medicine as a treatment for skin conditions, including acne and dandruff. It is also used to help with various conditions such as coughs, asthma and constipation.
In the paper, the researchers tested the antimicrobial potential of apricot oil to see whether it had any effect against invasive bacteria and yeasts. They concluded that apricot oil shows a degree of protection against bacteria and yeasts, killing them or at least inhibiting their growth.
The International Journal of Essential Oil Therapeutics published a study in January 2010 reporting that apricot oil has an antimicrobial effect against several bacteria, including:
The study concluded that apricot oil is most effective against Salmonella typhimurium.
A study published in Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences in the July–August 2014 issue found that apricot oil may be a possible complementary medicine for inflammatory bowel disease. The study was conducted on rats, but apricot kernel extract both with and without the oil was found to improve the unpleasant symptoms of colitis.
A Turkish study published in 2018 in Biotechnic and Histochemistry examined the gastroprotective effect of apricot kernel oil on stomach ulcers, also in rats. The rats had ulcers induced by ethanol, and one group received both ethanol and apricot oil. Apricot oil actually protected the rats' mucosa (the gut lining) from developing ulcers compared with the rats that received only ethanol. The researchers concluded that this was due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of apricot oil. Apricot kernel oil may in fact be an effective way to reduce the severity of stomach ulcers.
Older, established research published in Food and Chemical Toxicology in December 2011 describes the potential cardioprotective effects of apricot kernel oil. The study was conducted on rats and shows that apricot oil may be able to stimulate certain beneficial reactions in the cardiovascular system to prevent myocardial infarction – also known as a heart attack.
The analysis in the International Journal of Essential Oil Therapeutics explains the antioxidant value of apricot oil. The oil's relatively high phenolic content of 2.2 milligrams per millilitre is comparable to that of olive oil, and it may have protective effects against heart disease.
Apricot oil can also be a powerful way to ease the negative effect of chemotherapy on the immune system. A study published in the August 2016 issue of Lipids found that rats receiving cyclophosphamide that were also given apricot oil had less organ breakdown and more growth than those that received only the chemotherapy drug. The white blood cells of the rats given apricot oil also showed healthier levels of important immune compounds.
