They use ultrasonic vibrations to break essential oil and/or water down into a fine mist of microparticles. The water vapour released into the air charges it with negative ions, which bind to dust particles and bring them down to the ground. This not only purifies the air but also relieves symptoms made worse by dry air. Ultrasonic diffusers do not use heat and do not damage the essential oil the way diffusers that heat the oils do. Heat treatment drastically reduces their therapeutic qualities.
